Description


Cambodge also known as ‘Malabar Tamarind’ is a tropical fruit of medium size. The evergreen dioecious tree, with its rounded crown and horizontal or drooping branches attains a height of 18 mtrs. 


Fruit is a berry almost the size of an apple, which is yellow or red. It has 6 to 8 grooves that forms blunt lobes with tough rind. 6 to 8 are found and. Weighs about 50 to 180 grams.



Origin and Distribution


It is found in the Western Ghats of Kerala (India).extending from the Konkan southward to Travancore and into the shola forests of Nilgiris. It is also found in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.



Uses


The dried rind is used as a condiment for flavouring curries. In Sri Lanka the salted and dried rind is used for curing fish. The rind contains hydroxy citric acid and is widely used in anti-obesity drugs.
